what to do if you don’t know your birth time

  • Baby scrapbooks are worth checking! I’ve had clients find birth times in old family Bibles, baptismal records and even on framed pictures in the attic. It being written down is often more reliable than mom or dad’s memory. Note, usually it’s not on the hour or half-hour unless it was a scheduled C-section so make sure the data looks accurate.

  • Birth Certificates are the best source and are often either, “long form” which include birth time or “short form” versions that often don’t include the time. Sometimes they are also referred to as official and unofficial/abstract versions. Ask the places below for the long form/official version with the time listed, but just know there’s often no guarantee that the time will be on all long form/official versions and they usually charge $ for them. Some clients have gotten it from calling their birth-county register of deeds office where they just told them their birth time over the phone for no charge, but it all depends on the place you were born and how they record births. Try these and see where it leads you:

    • Google and *call the vital records office for the county you were born in.

      • Some counties keep vital records with the Register of Deeds office. Some have a specific vital records dept.

      • Some states have a Bureau of Vital Statistics that manage their vital records. Google for this in your birth state if the county leads don’t get you a time.

    • *Call the medical records department for the Hospital you were born and see where they direct you.

  • If you try all these and don’t get anywhere, contact me below.
